I know, I know — the song lyrics are kind of soppy:
The moon belongs to everyone —
The best things in life are free…
But there’s a non-poetic version that maybe is actually true.
I don’t know about you, but I actually DO sort of go through life this way.
For example, the Public Library.
I LOVE the public library. At my local library, you can check out:
- books
- movies
- telescopes
- framed paintings, and
- yes, ukuleles!
It’s such a magical concept. Every time I walk in and see ALL THE STUFF, it’s like being a little kid in a toy shop. “ALL THIS? I can pick anything I want? And — it’s free?”
It feels mildly illegal.
The Miracle of Belt Loops
You put on your pants.
Then you put on a belt.
Then — wait, whoops!
That belt alone isn’t doing you much good.
But somewhere in the past, the great Powers That Be, smiled down and gave us loops.
You may think I’m being facetious, but next time you’re dressing, pay attention to the physics — the smooth drag of the belt through the loops and then the magical cinching power the combo provide. Not to mention, the freedom to then march about in public with your pants up where they belong.
And guess what? You pay for pants, but — the best loops in life are free.
And what of… music?
Some days, when you’re not inclined to practice, remember that that clunky wooden box with strings is a portal to shared experiences and human connection.
It’s a key that unlocks laughter with friends and sing-alongs with strangers.
You never know whose day you might brighten or what memories you might forge with that clunky box with strings.
You probably had to pay for your instrument, but the best things it does — are free.
